SINUS LIFT

A sinus lift or a sinus graft is a surgery that increases the bone amount in your upper jawbone (posterior maxilla) and in the molar and premolar teeth. This is done by lowering the sinus membrane and placing a bone graft. The bone is added between the jaw and the maxillary sinuses on either side of your nose.

At Hyderabad Smiles Advanced Dental Hospitals, a Sinus lift is performed by our Implants team.

The procedure of sinus lift is done when the upper jaw does not have enough bone, or when the sinuses are very close to the jaw to insert dental implants. There are several reasons for this:

  • Individuals who lost teeth in their upper jaw (mainly the molar teeth) usually do not have enough bone to insert implants. The reason for this is the skull structure - the bones in the back of the upper jaw are less than the bones in the lower jaw.
  • Individuals who lost teeth in their upper jaw (mainly the molar teeth) usually do not have enough bone to insert implants. The reason for this is the skull structure - the bones in the back of the upper jaw are less than the bones in the lower jaw.
  • It may be difficult to place the implants because the maxillary sinus is very close to the upper jaw. The reason for this could be different shapes and sizes of sinus among individuals. Also, as you age, the sinus may get larger.
  • The bone must be lost because of periodontal (gum) disease.

Sinus Lift Procedure

The oral surgeon opens the gum tissue located close to the premolars and molars. The surgeon raises the tissue and exposes the bone. The surgeon then opens a small, oval-shaped window in the bone.

The sinus membrane on the other side of the window separates the sinus from the jaw. The surgeon gently pushes the membrane up and away from the jaw and creates space, which is packed with granules of bone-graft material. The amount of bone used in this surgery varies among individuals. Usually, this surgery requires several millimeters of bone to fill the space created above the jaw.

After the bone is placed, the tissue is stitched. The implants are inserted only after the grafted bone material meshes with your original bone. Inserting implants may take 4-9 months, depending on the graft material. This provides sufficient time to mesh the grafted material with your bone.

Sinus Lift - Osteotome Indirect Technique

A sinus lift is also called Sinus Augmentation and Sinus Procedure.

A sinus augmentation is performed by a less invasive procedure called the osteotome technique. This technique is typically used
when the sinus floor must be lifted by less than 4 mm.

In this technique, the gum tissue is flapped back, and a socket is made in the bone just 1-2 mm away from the sinus membrane.

Osteotomes are used to tap and lift the sinus floor. However, the amount of augmentation accomplished with the osteotome
technique is usually less than the augmentation achieved with the lateral window technique.

The dental implant is placed in the socket that was created during the sinus lift procedure. The implant is then left to integrate
with the bone. Typically, bone integration lasts 4-8 months.

The sinus lift procedure is done to stimulate bone growth and form a thick sinus floor that supports dental implants for teeth
replacement.
