Periodontal disease is the infection of the supporting tissues that keep the teeth in place. This severe gum disease is caused by the accumulation of plaque on the teeth, which is the result of poor oral hygiene. Dentists treat this severe gum disease either by non-surgical methods or by surgical methods.

Scaling and Root Planing is a non-surgical method that involves deep cleaning of the plaque and tartar/ calculus deposited in the gum lines or the roots.

In this conventional periodontal therapy, the dentists manually remove the plaque and the accumulated tartar at the root of the teeth below the gum line.

Prophylaxis/ Scaling

In this traditional treatment, dentists or dental hygienists remove all the harmful deposits accumulated on your teeth using curettes and ultrasonic devices and clean your teeth.

Scaling can be done in two ways – Manual Scaling and Ultrasonic Scaling.

  • Manual Scaling
In manual scaling, our dentists use a few fine instruments called hand scalers to remove the plaque and tartar from your teeth.
  • Ultrasonic Scaling
In ultrasonic scaling, our dentists or dental hygienists use an ultrasonic scaler to remove the deposits. The ultrasonic scaler with a water spray oscillates at vibrations of around 25,000 to 40,000Hz to scale and clean the teeth. Depending on the areas to be cleaned and scaled, we use different tips.

Deep Cleaning through Scaling and Root Planing
For deep cleaning, our dentists use curettes and ultrasonic devices to remove the deposits on your teeth and clean the roots of the teeth. This method quickly heals gum disease.

Does Teeth Scaling Result in Loose Teeth?

There is no truth that scaling may result in loose teeth. However, after removing the hard deposits accumulated in the spaces, the teeth may lose some support.

When scaling is done on the surface of the teeth to remove light deposits, it does not result in teeth loosening or sensitivity. Yet, when hard deposits are removed from the deep spaces, there could be a feeling of teeth loosening. This is because the hard deposit accumulated over time gives some support and firmness to the teeth. When these deposits are removed, there could be a feeling of loose teeth or bone loss.
